What is a strikethrough text generator?

A strikethrough generator doesn’t change your letters at all, it strikes through them. Behind the scenes it uses U+0336, the combining long stroke overlay: a Unicode mark that attaches itself to the character before it and draws a line through it. Type “hi” and the generator outputs four code points, “h” + strike + “i” + strike, which render as h̶i̶.

Because the letters themselves are untouched, the result is genuine text you can copy and paste into almost any app. Nobody needs a special font or app to see it, any modern phone renders combining marks correctly.

A practical note on Discord’s native ~~strikethrough~~: Discord, WhatsApp and Telegram all have built-in strike formatting (wrap text in ~~tildes~~), and it renders cleaner than Unicode. So why does this generator exist? For everywhere that doesn’t offer it: Instagram bios and captions, TikTok, X, YouTube comments. Use native ~~ where the app supports it; use Unicode strikethrough everywhere else.

And don’t confuse it with underline: underlining emphasizes or links; striking through deletes, jokes or revises. Different marks, different jobs.

Limitations worth knowing

• Screen readers often ignore combining marks entirely, many will read s̶a̶r̶c̶a̶s̶m̶ as plain “sarcasm,” so the joke may not land for screen-reader users. Some older readers stumble on the extra code points.
• Character limits shrink. Every struck letter is two code points, so a 10-letter word costs roughly 20 characters toward limits like X’s post count.
• Rendering varies. Most modern fonts align the strike neatly, but some apps or older fonts draw it slightly high, low or detached from the letters.
• Some apps strip combining marks in fields like search boxes or certain form inputs, the text pastes, but the line vanishes.
• Very old devices may show boxes or floating marks; any phone from the last decade handles U+0336 fine.

Tips for best results

1. Keep it short. The joke format works on single words and short phrases, a struck-through paragraph is just hard to read.
2. Use the classic formula. Crossed-out honest word + visible replacement: the contrast is the whole joke.
3. Test rendering first. Copy a sample into the exact app and check the line sits neatly through the letters.
4. Don’t overdo it. One crossed-out word per post is a punchline; five in a row is visual noise.
